Sending your child to school for the first time is a huge moment for any parent. In Varanasi, the nursery admission process can feel confusing — especially with so many schools, different age cut-offs, and well-meaning but conflicting advice from family members. This guide cuts through the noise.
When does nursery admission happen in Varanasi?
For Session 2027 (starting February–April 2027), most schools in Varanasi open their nursery admission process between August 2026 and December 2026. The most sought-after schools fill up early — sometimes by October — so don't wait until the new year to start applying.
Some forward-thinking schools (including Vertos Public School) open early-bird applications even earlier, especially for their founding cohort.
What is the right age for nursery in Varanasi?
Per the National Education Policy 2020, the recommended age for Nursery admission is 3 years (turning 3 by the start of the academic session). Most CBSE schools in Varanasi follow this:
- Nursery (Pre-Nursery in some schools): 3 to 4 years
- LKG: 4 to 5 years
- UKG: 5 to 6 years
- Class 1: 6 to 7 years
Some schools have a 6-month grace either side — always confirm with the specific school you're applying to.
What documents are needed?
For nursery admission in Varanasi, you typically need:
- Child's birth certificate (original + photocopy)
- Aadhar card of the child (if available)
- 4–6 passport-size photographs of the child
- Photographs of both parents
- Aadhar / address proof of parents
- Medical/vaccination record
- Filled application form (collected from school or downloaded)
What really matters when choosing a nursery
Honestly? At nursery age, fancy facilities and big buildings matter less than these five things:
- 1. Class size and teacher attention. A nursery teacher with 40 children is just managing chaos. Look for class sizes under 25, ideally with an assistant.
- 2. Female attendants in the bus and washroom. Non-negotiable for this age.
- 3. Safety infrastructure. CCTV with parent visibility, secure pickup procedures, trained nurse on campus.
- 4. Play-based curriculum. At 3, your child should be playing, singing, exploring — not memorising worksheets. Schools that brag about "Class 1 syllabus in nursery" are doing it wrong.
- 5. Warmth of the staff. Visit. Watch. If the receptionist is curt, the teachers will be too.
The nursery admission process — step by step
- Step 1 (Aug–Sep 2026): Make a shortlist of 4–6 nurseries within reasonable bus distance from your home. Don't shortlist on prestige alone — visit each one.
- Step 2 (Sep–Oct 2026): Visit each campus during a working day. Watch how staff interact with current students. Ask about class size, fees, transport.
- Step 3 (Oct–Nov 2026): Submit applications to your top 2–3 choices. Pay the registration fee. Keep all original documents safe.
- Step 4 (Nov–Dec 2026): Attend the parent interaction (most schools have a relaxed parent–child meeting, not a formal "interview" for nursery). Be honest, be warm — they're seeing how you parent.
- Step 5 (Dec 2026 – Jan 2027): Receive your offer. Pay first-term fees. Get your bus route confirmed.
- Step 6 (Feb–Apr 2027): Your child starts school. The first week is always emotional — for both of you. That's normal.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying to only one school. Always have 2–3 applications running.
- Choosing a school based on what neighbours say. Their priorities aren't yours. Visit yourself.
- Ignoring the bus commute. A 1-hour daily commute at age 3 is exhausting. 30 minutes is the comfortable upper limit.
- Believing "early academic pressure" claims. Real research shows play-based nurseries produce stronger learners by Class 5.
- Waiting until January to apply. Good schools are full by then.
