Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a parent in Varanasi. Here's a practical framework — and the right questions to ask — before you sign that admission form.
1. Start with curriculum and board affiliation
The two most common boards in Varanasi are CBSE and ICSE, with some schools following the UP State Board. CBSE has the widest acceptance for Indian competitive exams (JEE, NEET, UPSC), more transferable across India, and is the choice of most modern schools in Varanasi.
Ask the school: "Are you affiliated, in the affiliation process, or running a CBSE-aligned curriculum?" A new school may be in the affiliation process — that's normal — but the curriculum framework should already be set.
2. Visit the campus — twice if you can
Don't decide based on a brochure or a video. Walk through the classrooms, look at the library, the labs, the playground. Notice how the staff treat each other and the students. The atmosphere of a school during a normal working day tells you more than any glossy presentation.
For schools opening in 2027, request a construction site visit — serious schools welcome this.
3. Ask about class size
In many older Varanasi schools, class sizes can reach 40 or more students. That's a recipe for your child becoming invisible. Ask the school: "What is your maximum class strength, and what is your teacher-to-student ratio?" Modern schools cap at around 25–30 students per section.
4. Safety — beyond CCTV
Every school today says it has CCTV. Dig deeper:
- Are there female attendants in the pre-primary section?
- Is there a trained nurse and a properly stocked medical room?
- Are the school buses GPS-tracked, with a parent app?
- Do they conduct regular fire drills?
- What is the visitor policy during school hours?
5. Transport that actually reaches your area
If you live in Cholapur, Sarnath, Pindra, Babatpur, Harhua, or surrounding areas, ask whether the school has — or plans — a route covering your locality. A great school 45 minutes away in chaotic traffic becomes a daily struggle. A 15-minute, well-organised bus ride changes your child's quality of life.
6. The "hidden curriculum" — sports, arts, life skills
Academics matter, but the students who flourish in life are usually the ones who also discovered a passion in school — music, painting, cricket, debate, robotics, theatre. Ask the school what its co-curricular calendar looks like. A weekly art period and inter-school sports day is a minimum; serious schools have dedicated faculty for arts, music, dance, and STEM clubs.
7. Fee transparency
A trustworthy school has nothing to hide about fees. Ask for a written breakup of: admission fee, quarterly tuition, transport (if used), books, uniforms, and any annual charges. Ask about sibling discounts and any early-bird benefits for founding-cohort families.
8. Talk to the leadership
The principal and founders set the tone for the entire school. If you can meet them during your visit, do. Five minutes of honest conversation will tell you whether the school is led with vision and care — or whether it's just a business.
